Since the return of Coach (Damon Wayans, Jr.) last week, the latest episode of “New Girl” seems to be going through some growing pains of juggling six ensemble characters. The episode connects the characters with the ubiquity of Hop Foo’s Chinese menus.
Nick’s ordering a boatload of takeout for breakfast, much to the chagrin of health-conscious Coach. Coach tells a careless, dumpling-munching Nick that he needs to work out, warning him about the Boyfriend Fifteen (i.e., extra relationship weight).
Jess, who’s unable to secure transportation funding for her kids’ Ocean Conservation Day beach trip from Principal Foster, gets advice from Nick to “try a little less,” and she takes out her frustration on the environmentally wasteful menus. Jess storms down to Hop Foo’s to confront the eco-friendly manager, Brian, who convinces her that the problem will be taken care of, but she later finds she’s been double-crossed after chasing down the delivery guy.
Coach convinces Nick to take a day to work out, while a clearly lonely and displaced Schmidt comes over to drop off his key (and subsequently finds ways to insert himself into the new living arrangements despite being “busy”). Meanwhile, “typical Winston” has been written off by Coach–in their college days, he was always too injured to play–but Winston’s determined to prove that he’s not a quitter and jams his foot in the process.
