This is the end….all good things must come to an end. And thus, Breaking Bad finished with a big finale putting an end to an emotionally tensed season 5 and to all the disaster Walter White created.
The episode starts with Walt stealing a car and digging around for the keys. He seems scared and even more when police lights flash outside. Obviously he is not ready to be arrested yet even if the end of last week’s episode tended to tell us the opposite. Actually he wants to clear the mess he has done.
Sneaking into Gretchen and Elliott’s house, he lets them all his money and asks them to find a way to give money to his family. He knows Skyler and his son won’t take his money if they need help so Walt orders his former colleague to use his money telling them it’s theirs. He threatens to do it or he’ll make them kill. Actually we discover that the red light pointed on them was just laser lights.
Meanwhile Jesse is building a little wooden box in what seems to be his new life. Actually it’s just a dream. He is still Lydia and Todd’s slave cooking meths for them. Talking about Lydia and Todd, they both meet usually at the same place which happens to be a mistake as…surprise surprise Walt is here. He points out that it was also their (Lydia and he) place when they were working together. He makes them believe he doesn’t have money anymore and need to be back on the market. But Lydia doesn’t trust him.
After meeting with Lydia, Walt decides to pay a visit to Skyler for one last goodbye. He knows she doesn’t want to talk to him but he wants to change so he gives her the lottery ticket with the coordinates of where Hank and Gomez are buried. With this ticket she can ask for immunity to the DEA. But the main important aspect of the meeting is Walt’s final confession: he admits he hasn’t done all of this for his family but also for his own ego: “I did it for me. I liked it. I was good at it. And I was really, I was alive,” he says.
Then he decides not only to have his revenge on the Nazis but also to save Jesse. He stops by the Nazis place and saw his former partner in a really really bad shape. In a quick move, he grabs his keys, opens from the distance the truck revealing an automatic gun. Walt pushes Jesse on the floor while everyone in the room is killed.
Finally, once it’s over, he grabs the phone and talks with Lydia who thinks Walt has been killed by Todd but is surprised to hear him on the phone. And to make the situation worse for her, Walt tells her she made two mistakes by coming to their usual place. Not only they met, but also he poisoned her drink.
Jesse points a gun to him ready to kill him but notices that during the gunshot, Walt was hurt and that he is currently dying. Walt gives him the car keys and let him get away.
After he left, Walt walks over Todd’s lab and picks up the gas mask remembering certainly what he has been through before falling to the ground and dying while police lights appears in the background.
