4 Things to Know About The Fosters 5×02 – Exterminate Her

The Fosters season 5 has barely begun, but there’s already a truckload of drama. Read on for 4 things to know about The Fosters 5×02, “Exterminate Her.”

1. Callie’s looking to the future.

At the beginning of The Fosters 5×02, we learn that the District Attorney has dropped Callie’s remaining charges. Talk about a cause for celebration, right? Well, not exactly. Although Robert throws Callie a surprise party, Stef and Lena are in no mood for festivities. On the heels of last week’s dramatic season premiere, the moms are eager to encourage Callie to make better decisions and look to the future. Even the historically territorial Stef realizes that raising kids takes a village, so she and Lena invite Robert to take a bigger role in Callie’s life.

The first step? Following up with Helen, a.k.a. the professor who encouraged Callie to consider going to art school back in The Fosters 4×15. Between her lack of a portfolio, her suspicions that Robert paid off Helen to let Callie audit her classes, and her insecurities related to being the only high-schooler in a college classroom, Callie’s tempted to give up – but spending time with art student (and roller derby girl) Ximena helps change her mind. After Ximena encourages Callie to “put all [her] chaos on the canvas” and “unleash [her] beast,” Callie decides that art might be worth pursuing after all. By the end of the episode, she regrets allowing her senior project to be tossed in the trash, but luckily Lena rescues it. As Lena and Stef explain to Callie, “We don’t want you to throw away your past, we just want you to stop repeating it.”

2. The twins’ senior project keeps getting more complicated.

Although the actual construction is yet to start, the twins’ senior project has already gone through a number of iterations. In The Fosters 5×02, Jesus decides – with a less-than-subtle nudge from Emma – that he no longer wants Mariana to work with him. There’s just one problem: Due to his TBI, he may or may not be a rising senior, which means he needs a confirmed rising senior to secure the necessary funding from the school. Continuing his trend of telling Jesus things that Stef and Lena would rather keep quiet, Gabe lets the cat out of the bag… just in time for Drew to suspend funding for juniors doing senior projects in an impressively petty strike against Lena. Undeterred, Gabe volunteers to rustle up donated supplies while Emma finds a summer service grant for the project. Meanwhile, Jesus realizes he’s going to need help with the paperwork and tells a quietly disappointed Mariana that he’s going to ask Emma.

3. Brandon is officially the show’s comic relief.

After losing his spot at Juilliard for helping another student cheat on his SATs, Brandon’s barred from applying to college for a year, which means he’s currently deciding between flipping burgers and scooping ice cream. Enter music therapist Grace, who decides to act on their unconsummated chemistry by calling with a handcuff “emergency” that goes right over Brandon’s head. After Callie clues him in, he clumsily initiates a follow-up conversation with Grace that turns into a handcuff-tanglingly hilarious kiss. At the very least, they’re a great match in the awkwardness department.

4. The Fosters have new neighbors.

Whenever a TV show features new neighbors moving in, one thing’s for sure: Trouble’s afoot. Stef has a pleasant enough interaction with Dean, the father of the family, but sparks ominously fly between Mariana and Dean’s son, Logan – and then Dean’s wife, Tess, inadvertently insults Anchor Beach. Did I mention that Stef and Tess apparently have a whole lot of history? There goes the neighborhood…
