We spoke with Kyla Pratt about her emotional episode, airing tonight, and how as a mother herself, she was able to tap into the emotions necessary for the intense and powerful scenes.
Read on for our exclusive interview with Kyla Pratt below:
What originally attracted you to the role of Trish?
Kyla Pratt: What attracted me to Trish [was] of course, her bubbly personality. Knowing that she was in a sober living house and still so happy and optimistic, and really trying to understand what was going on with Trish and what her backstory was, drew me to [the role]. Knowing that we were in a sober living house, I knew this was going to get crazy at some point. There has to be something going on with this girl and now we’re going to get a peek into Trish’s life.
This episode is said to take place in real time. Can you take the viewers through how this episode will differ from the others with that aspect?
The way this episode is shot is amazing. We do a lot of steady cam. It feels like you’re walking through the situation with the characters in the scene. The only breaks are the commercials. After the commercials, we’re right where we left off. This isn’t days, but it’s maybe a couple of hours trying to figure out what’s going on with Trish’s daughter. It keeps you on the edge of your seat and it keeps you excited at all times. It may even surprise a few of you out there.
As a mother yourself, was it difficult for you to draw the emotions necessary during the more intense and emotional scenes? How do you prepare for something like that?
It wasn’t difficult at all. Just being a mother and knowing what that love feels like … and having to imagine someone who is a mother and loves their child and can’t be around their child. I have a very big imagination. That’s something difficult to imagine and luckily I have my kids to come home to at night and it reminds me that they’re there. I was lucky enough to be able to draw as well from that place and not having to find it somewhere else. I know a lot of women who aren’t mothers who have to draw that kind of emotion and I’m just like “Girl, where do you get it from?!” I can’t imagine if I didn’t have my kids, having to figure that out. It’s all part of acting and bringing this character to life.
