First of all, thank you for taking the time to answer our questions today! At Pop City Life, we’ve been big fans since your American Idol days!
From “Fire” (about starting over and rebuilding) to “Reds Turn Blue” (about coping with mania and anxiety), the singles off your soon-to-be-released EP “The Looking Glass” seem to have struck a personal chord with fans. How would you say the EP compares to your previous work? How are you feeling about releasing it to the world on April 16th?
I think “The Looking Glass” is a little more focused in it’s intent. There’s more of a constant through-line. This last year sort of forced my songwriting process to become a bit more insular, since the ability to go out and experience more of the outside world was on pause.
I’m really excited to see how my fans react to this record. I’m always proud of the music I put out, but this EP feels a little different. I’ve been humbled by the response to the singles so far.
As someone who deals with constant anxiety, I really enjoyed and appreciated that acknowledgment and how the music made me feel while listening. I am a firm believer that music can help us through. How would you say the writing process was for you when it came time to craft “The Looking Glass”?
The process of making this EP was certainly helpful to me. Just the opportunity to purge some of that anxiety onto the page, I suppose. Songwriting can be a great therapist, if you’re able to submit to that process.
As you captured in “Strange World” – another single off your upcoming EP – life has certainly changed a lot over the past year. What have been some of your favorite ways to pass the time while social distancing?
Honestly, I’ve just enjoyed being present at home. This is the longest my wife and I have been in the same space together in, well, ever. I’ve sort of just settled into songwriting, and binge-watching stuff that we’ve already watched before, like The Office, Breaking Bad, and Brooklyn 99.
You recently announced that you’ll be performing three shows live from Nashville via the concert streaming platform Mandolin. Tell us more about what to expect from those shows and any aspects that you’re particularly excited for fans to experience.
I hope the excitement comes through for everyone! Just the opportunity to get back into a room with my band, and play these songs the way they were written to be played. Particularly, the new EP.
With many brick-and-mortar venues closed due to the pandemic, livestreams have emerged as a valuable way to connect artists with their audiences. At the same time, there’s nothing quite like an in-person concert. You’ll be embarking on the U.S. leg of your 2021 tour in September – how do you feel about hitting the road again?
I’m looking forward to getting back out on the road, and I’m also anxious to see how the dynamic will change. I think there will be some changes to the process, and change can be a bit scary. But, to be able to get back to the live, in-person experience is exciting, for sure.
After your U.S. tour dates., you’ll be heading to Europe with Kris Allen in October. You and Kris have known each other since appearing on consecutive seasons of “American Idol” more than a decade ago, so fans are understandably excited to see you two co-headline. How did the idea of touring together come about?
Kris and I have circled the idea for years. We have the same agent, so once the booking process started in earnest, it came together pretty quickly, until the pandemic started. I’m looking forward to sharing the stage with Kris again. He’s obviously super talented. And he’s a great hang besides.
What surprises do you and Kris have in store for your European fans? What can the fans look forward to from this tour?
Well, if I said anything, they wouldn’t be surprises. So, there’s that. 🙂
As far as what fans can look forward to? I think we both have pretty strong music catalogs to pull from, so getting to see two of those, live, for the price of one? Sounds pretty good to me.
Speaking of people you know thanks to American Idol, David Archuleta is currently also based in Nashville. Now that you both live in the same city, how would you feel about collaborating with him at some point in the future? Any chance of Archie making a special appearance during one of your Nashville concert livestreams?
Yeah, Archie and I touch base every few weeks! Love that dude. I’d love to collaborate with him. Just gotta get those pesky schedules to line up.
I know he’s got some new music out, which is great by the way. So, not sure if he’s available to join us. We’ll have to figure something out down the line, though.
Thank you so much for speaking with us! We can’t wait for everything you have in store this year.
