Read on for our exclusive interview with Jonny Rios below:
What motivated you to initially pursue acting as your career? Was there anyone who influenced or inspired you?
I happened to fall into acting by accident. I was in College in Gainesville, Florida where I was studying Elementary Education. As part of my degree, I needed to take ‘Elective courses.’ One being Acting 101. I remember going in with a great amount of interest but also a bit of my guard up. Arts have never been something I was exposed to in my youth. It was all about sports. When I walked into class I remember looking at everyone and feeling completely out of place. No one dressed like me. No one looked like me. My acting professor and now mentor Gregg Jones started the class with an exercise. Throwing us right into it. I remember feeling the complete opposite of what I felt walking into class, just 10 minutes earlier. I felt at home.
Paul Walker was a huge influence to me. The work that he did with his Non-For-Profit – Reach Out World Wide (ROWW) showed me that not only can you be successful as an artist but you can use that success to have a larger voice in which you can influence and help others in need.
Can you tell us about your character Ravi on the new series Chambers and what viewers can expect from him as a character?
It’s hard to talk about my character as he is a great mystery for most of Chambers. I will say this – his name is Ravi Jerome. He is a first generation Hispanic kid who goes to Crystal Valley High school. Coming from a hard working class family, he has huge dreams and expectations of his future. Incredibly gifted and charismatic. He is childhood best friends with Elliot who he tries to protect. Ravi is the life of the party and the one you want by your side when things get tough. Ravi’s got your back.
Chambers is described as a horror and thriller suspense series full of twists and turns. What can viewers expect from the new episodes? What are you most excited for them to see?
Viewers can expect a roller coaster ride of emotions. Truthful story telling from both the cast and crew. As far as the horror aspect of the show, Chambers is CREEPY! You will want to sleep with your lights on after watching this show.
What initially attracted you to this role in particular? Were you eager to take on a role that allowed you to explore this genre?
When I read this script, the words popped off the page and performed for me like a three-act play. It was that intense. That moving. That real for me. I knew this part was mine the moment I read Ravi’s character description. What Leah Rachel (the creator of Chambers) was able to create in this story was pure magic. It’s an absolute honor to be a part of this project.
How has the experience been working alongside the cast?
I had an incredible time working with everyone. We are truly a Motley Crew. Everyone in the cast is incredibly unique and talented; coming from very different environments and upbringings. I fed off of this. It helped me grow as an artist and an all-around human being. I am beyond grateful for the family I built in this production.
Chambers is slated to be a “binge-worthy” hit. What are some of your favorite series to binge-watch on a night in?
I am a HUGE Chef’s Table fan. I’ve watched it three times over. I absolutely love cooking and the art of it. Watching each chef from a different part of the world share their culture and history through food, it’s incredible. Food is universal, it’s what brings people together.
Can you talk a little about your charity work and why you enjoy giving back to your community?
I am a huge advocate of charity work. With such hectic times currently going on, I believe community is vital in the progression of our planet. Education I believe to be the core of this progression. I love to help with my community in any way I can. Teaching-artist work happens to be my primary focus. I believe sharing my art and skills I learned as an Elementary Education Major in college go hand and hand. I really love working with kids in my community.
