In The Fosters 5×06, Jesus took a leap, Callie and Aaron had a debate, and Jude hit the big time. Read on for 5 things to know about The Fosters 5×06, “Welcome to the Jungler.”
1. Callie and Aaron debate how to #resist.
Toward the end of last week’s episode, Callie found out about Ximena’s DACA status and got involved with UCSD student activist group PSAC. In The Fosters 5×06, Aaron objects to PSAC protesting a right-wing personality Shiloh McCullen’s impending on-campus lecture, citing the First Amendment. When Callie points out that Ximena can’t hide the fact that she’s Latina if questioned by an ICE agent, Aaron retorts, “You think I’m hiding? It’s not deceptive of me to not disclose my private medical information.” Airing just a few days after the violence in Charlottesville and a couple of weeks after Lil Duval “joked” on “The Breakfast Club” radio show about harming women for not disclosing that they’re transgender, The Fosters 5×06 tackles more than one timely issue and certainly provides some food for thought.
Callie: “People look at you and they have no idea what you’ve been through or how hard you’ve had to fight to be who you really are.”
Aaron: “Which is why people need to talk about things, not just dismiss each other. They need to hear from the people they might be hurting.”
Callie: “I don’t think they want to hear from the other side, or they would come to debate, not to give paid speeches. We need to stand up against these people and stand with the people who are less protected and fortunate than we are.”
Aaron: “Just be careful HOW you stand up.”
2. Jude and Taylor get internet-famous.
Remember the video game that caused friction between Jude and Noah earlier in the season? It’s called Vainglory, and The Fosters 5×06 reveals their mutual friend Taylor is into it too. After Noah objects to the homophobia and sexism of a big-name player who uploads his gameplay videos to YouTube, Taylor and Jude record their own playthrough, which Noah posts on his account. When the online backlash sets in, Noah takes down the video, so Taylor and Jude start livestreaming under the name GirlAndGayGuy. Their target audience? People who “love playing the game, but without all that other negative baggage.”
3. Stef makes a promise she can’t keep.
Although Kyle is finally out of prison for a murder he didn’t commit, the experience left its mark. When Callie and Aaron visit him in The Fosters 5×06, they learn he’s too afraid to leave the house for fear that Detective Gray will come after him. In a bid to take down Gray and get justice for Kyle, Stef convinces Kyle to wear a wire and try to get Molloy to admit Gray offered him a deal in exchange for “forgetting” Kyle’s alibi, but the plan backfires when Molloy threatens to call the detective. Stef promises to keep Kyle safe, but he knows she has no way of proving any wrongdoing…
4. Mariana’s roller derby career is over – or is it?
Toward the beginning of the episode, Mariana – I mean Scariana – explains to Callie why roller derby has become so important to her: “I don’t have any friends at school anymore and I need to feel like I belong somewhere, that somebody wants me on their team, and everyone at derby’s so supportive of each other. I need that.” Moreover, this is Mariana’s first group of Latina friends. Even so, Lena and Stef veto Mariana joining the team amid fears she’ll be hurt like Jesus, so Callie recruits Ximena to change Lena’s mind: “Are there bruises? Yes, but they heal, and what they leave behind is a feeling of empowerment.”
5. Marriage is in the air.
After Gabe admits to Jesus that he regrets how things ended with Ana, Jesus plots to get his biological parents back together – then learns of Mike and Ana’s engagement. Inspired by a warning from Gabe about not making choices he’ll regret, Jesus proposes (yes, proposes) to Emma. She’s stunned, quickly notes that they’re only 16, and says she can’t marry someone who’s “willfully throwing [education] away.” Jesus promptly reconsiders dropping out of school – but only so she’ll marry him. Needless to say, the face Lena makes in response to this development is priceless.
