Season 4 of The Fosters recently kicked off with a tense premiere episode and a nail-biting cliffhanger involving Mariana Foster, played by Cierra Ramirez. We spoke with Cierra about what to expect from The Fosters 4×02 and the rest of the season, as well as her new EP and what she plans to binge-watch next on Netflix! Read on for our interview with Cierra Ramirez.
The season 4 premiere was intense! When you read the script for The Fosters 4×01, what was it like to realize that in some ways, the ordeal at Anchor Beach was just the beginning for Mariana and the rest of the family?
Cierra Ramirez: It was a pretty intense way to start out, especially because the following episode continues on where [the premiere] left off. It’s definitely going to set the mood for the rest of the season for the family – they all reacted to it and all related to it in a different way. I mean, Jesus was best friends with Nick.
Mariana briefly spoke with Nick in The Fosters 4×01, so she knows he’s upset about seeing her kiss Mat. Going into The Fosters 4×02, does she grasp how personally focused Nick is on her, and does she understand how much danger she’s in?
She definitely knows that it’s because of Mat, but it’s a misunderstanding. For Nick to go to these measures and to bring a gun to school is just terrifying to her because it was, like I said, a misunderstanding. It was a goodbye kiss that should have never taken place, but Nick should have most definitely never seen it. I think she is living with that fear, especially because he isn’t found. No one knows where he is, and it’s going to affect her really hard.
The previews suggest that Nick approaches Mariana in her bedroom in the upcoming episode. How does everyone in The Fosters universe handle that situation, and what’s the fallout?
The last episode leaves you with Stef sweeping the house and making sure that it’s safe for the Foster family, and the school is going to be big on security because Nick isn’t anywhere to be found. Everyone’s trying to protect the family as much as they can, but he is hiding there, and we’ll see how long he stays hidden! I can’t really give too much away!
Looking beyond The Fosters 4×02 to the rest of the season, what changes are we going to see in Mariana, and how does the Nick situation affect her?
She’s going to get into a really dark place and try to keep herself busy. One thing I admire about Mariana is that she’s always kind of dabbling in different things – she takes on whatever comes to her. She’s been really into coding, so she’s going to be getting into robotics this season and she’s helping Callie break into the Fost & Found website, so that’s something that will kind of be her light.
You recently tweeted that The Fosters 4×01 and The Fosters 4×02 were both crazy intense to film. That process must have been emotionally draining for you as an actress! How do you step back and separate yourself from all that drama when you leave the set at the end of the day?
I love Netflix! It’s nice to just kind of melt away in your bed after a long day of crying, and just binge-watch! Movies are my life, so I can’t get enough of it, really.
Do you have any specific series you follow on Netflix?
You know, I actually didn’t see the last season of Orange is the New Black, but now that they just put out the brand new season, I have two seasons to binge-watch, so I’m really excited about that.
I watched half of OITNB season 3, so people are like, “Watch season 4!” and I’m like, “No, I’m really behind, don’t tell me anything!”
Also, don’t tell me anything!
Lastly, you just dropped your debut EP, Discreet, so congratulations on that! What has the fan reaction been like so far?
Thank you so much! It’s been really positive. I’ve been really excited to hear the feedback because it’s something I’ve been working on for over a year. A lot of people didn’t really know that I sang, and if they did, they were introduced through The Fosters. Singing is actually how I got into acting, so to bring something that was my first love back into my life and to release Discreet was really nice for me. It’s been really fun to see the reactions, and I’ve been getting lots of videos of fans dancing to my songs and singing along. It’s super awesome!
