Kira Kosarin has been branching out. In addition to reprising her role as Phoebe Thunderman in the third season of Nick’s The Thundermans, she leads the cast of the original TV movie One Crazy Cruise set to air on Nickelodeon this August, and will also guest-star in the new Nick series School of Rock. We chatted with Kira about her acting projects, being nominated for a Kids Choice Award and creeping on her fans’ social media pages! Read on for our full interview with Kira Kosarin.
How cool was it to be nominated for a Kids’ Choice Award?
Kira Kosarin: It was incredibly cool. I’ve been watching the Kids’ Choice Awards since I was really really little. I always wanted to go, let alone be nominated, so it was really incredible. I was very much a Nick kid – I watched Nickelodeon pretty much all the time, which is why it’s funny that I ended up on the network. It was also really cool to think about the actresses who had been in the [Favorite TV Actress] category before, and even the actresses [Chloe Bennett, Debby Ryan, Jennifer Morrison, Laura Marano, Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting] who were in that category with me this year. Getting to be included in a category with them was really surreal.
Speaking of Nick, you’ve started production on season three of The Thundermans…
I’m in the dressing room as we speak!
What can viewers can expect from the upcoming episodes?
I honestly can’t tell you much because we get the scripts each week when we shoot them, and we’re only on the second episode. I can tell you that the baby in the Thunderman family, little baby Chloe, is going to become a huge part of the show in the third season. She gets older and becomes a really big part of the family, and the girl who’s been cast to play Chloe is absolutely amazing – I hope they’ll be announcing her soon. And you can see some more superhero antics! I know there’s at least a couple of story lines where there’s some butt-kicking happening, which was one of the most fun parts of the season two finale, so I’m really glad they’re bringing that back for the third season. There will also be a lot more Cherry; Phoebe and Cherry’s friendship is played out a lot, and Phoebe’s relationship with her boyfriend will be continuing, so I’m really excited to see where that goes.
It sounds like there’s a lot coming up!
Yeah, there is! I mean, it’s The Thundermans – there’s always a lot coming up!
Aside from your work on that show, you’ll also be appearing in the Nickelodeon movie One Crazy Cruise. What attracted you to that?
When they offered it to me, I was really excited to play somebody other than Phoebe. I absolutely love playing her – I’ve been playing her for two and a half years, pretty much every day, and she’s become a huge part of my life, but I was really excited to explore a different character for a minute. The movie was a perfect way to do that. The character I got to play is still nerdy in the vein of Stevie, but Ellie is kind of neurotic and scared of everything and dorky, and she has no sense of style. It’s a really cute movie. I had a blast working on it.
It sounds like Ellie is similar to Phoebe, but also different.
They’re not polar opposites, but they definitely have some specific differences. When I first got the script, I had a six-hour plane ride to New York and I spent a lot of it going through and writing down any specific character trait about Ellie that was different from Phoebe. I really wanted to make them distinct; I didn’t want them to blend together. I wanted to make sure that I played a different character – it’s cool to get that opportunity, and I wanted to take it. The biggest difference that I remember noticing is that Phoebe is a superhero and she’s not scared of anything, and Ellie is scared of anything and everything. She’s insecure and a little bit shaky all the time, and really needs her sister’s help to build her self confidence. She’s a creative soul and she’s really smart, which is so much fun to play, but she definitely spends a lot of the movie finding her self-confidence, which Phoebe has a surplus of. I worked hard on making sure there was a difference, and they also did my hair and my makeup and my styling completely different, so that was fun.
You’re having such a busy year – you also have a guest star spot on the Nick series School of Rock. What can you tell us about your role and how that came to be?
It was, again, really cool to play a different character. This one was completely different than anything I’ve ever played. It’s Princess Oliviana – or, rather, a girl playing Princess Oliviana at a seven-year-old’s birthday party who’s just an awful person! I get to play the villain, which I’ve never done before. I sing all nice and wonderful and I actually end up trying to get rid of the band, and they sabotage my performance and end up taking over. I also got to wear a really beautiful princess costume! I’m a super-girly girl, so if you give me a gorgeous, sparkly princess ballgown, then I’ll be happy.
How has the fan support been so far? Do you enjoy interacting with people on social media?
The fan support has been incredible. Watching it grow over the past two and a half years has been really surreal. I absolutely love interacting on social media. I spend a lot of time on Instagram and Twitter as it is because I’m a 17-year-old girl, but getting to interact with fans is definitely the coolest part of it. That’s why I tend to use Instagram more for posting and Twitter more for interacting, because I feel like Twitter can be more personal. And, I’m not gonna lie – there have been fans who have tweeted me and I’ll stalk their page and be like “Oh, we have the same favorite TV show!” and I’ll just follow them or talk to them for no reason, and it freaks people out sometimes! People will be like, “Uh-oh, Kira’s creeping on her fans!” It’s fun for me, though. I like to know who I’m interacting with. It’s easy to lose sight of that on social media. I also love when I get to meet kids and then follow them on social media, or they tweet me and tell me that they’re coming to see the show. It’s a nice way to meet people.
I feel like for a lot of people, it’s their dream for the celebrities they tweet to check out their page.
I mean, it’s my dream for my celebrities that I like! I am still a fangirl. I may be on TV, but I’m still a fan of a lot of people who I’ve watched on TV my whole life, and I still get excited when certain people fave my tweets. Jenna Marbles followed me and I almost cried! I feel like if I can do something so simple as favoriting somebody’s tweet – something that takes no time out of my day – and make somebody smile, that’s the coolest power in the world.
Follow Kira on Twitter and Instagram – you never know, she might stalk your page!
