I’m so excited to talk to you today. The twitter response from your fans has been incredible.
It really is. It’s amazing. I’m excited.
What inspired you to get into acting? Was there anyone who inspired or influenced you?
I was a typical kid who dreamed of being an actor. I always loved old movies and westerns and classics. My dedication to become a serious actor, it definitely intensified. I love the craft and the process of bringing a character to life.
Is there anyone you would love to work with someday, if you could pick anyone?
If I could pick anyone to work with someday…it would have to be Ryan Gosling. I have lots of respect for him and how he chooses roles and portrays them. He chooses roles that he can play easily without trying. I think that’s great. I aspire to become an actor like him one day.
That’s a good choice. That’s not the first time I’ve gotten that answer.
[*laughs*]Can you talk a little about your role of Connor on ABC Family’s The Fosters and what originally attracted you to it?
I actually tested for Jude, but in the process I was cast as Connor and they wrote me in. What’s great is the role highlights my actual personality type. I don’t have to try and portray Connor. It comes very natural.
The Fosters has been a massive success for the ABC Family network. What do you think it is about The Fosters that sets it apart from other series out there?
It’s a highly relatable show to so many people, ages, and demographics. The show realistically hits some topics that so many kids and parents live with. I think the fact that they’re not afraid to tackle these issues is appreciated no matter what their age.
What do you think it is about Jude’s and Connor’s friendship that resonates so much with viewers?
We’re every day kids dealing with issues that many shows don’t dare tackle. It’s relatable. It shows the softer side of being a teen. Also, the complex issues that so many kids go through with sexuality and deciding how to label themselves, often before they’re ready. I think Hayden Byerly’s friendship off-screen really comes through in our on screen chemistry. We have scenes and we don’t have to try to care about each other because we actually do. That shows up on screen.
How would you say Jude’s and Connor’s relationship has evolved? Do you see Connor as more of a big brother protector for Jude?
At first Jude was portrayed as a troubled foster kid and Connor as this popular jock. Now we’re seeing that what we see on the outside isn’t always what’s going on in the inside. I think that’s like a lot of people. With Connor’s dad, we kind of wondered what happened when he painted his nails blue in season 1. We didn’t see what happened to Connor. In season 2, we’re seeing the ramifications of the friendship. Now his dad doesn’t agree. We’re seeing the seemingly perfect kid isn’t so perfect.
Will we be seeing more of that family dynamic? Will we learn more about Connor’s relationship with his father and how it impacts his relationship with Jude?
Yeah, definitely. We’ll definitely be seeing more of that family dynamic with his dad. It’d be great to have Connor break more boundaries and stereotypes. Hopefully show how families have to deal with them. Connor and his relationship with Jude have a lot of opportunity to bring positive light to a common issue among teens.
With the season finale fast approaching, what can fans expect from Connor in these last episodes?
Well, those issues with Connor and his dad are not over. The season finale will definitely engage fans. The rest of season 2 needs to hurry up. The finale is going to be very riveting. I’m so excited.
How has the experience been working with the cast? Have there been any memorable moments?
The entire cast, the crew, and the creators are great people. Everyone says we’re like a big family and really, it’s so true. So many of them bring experience to the screen and I’m actually continually learning from them. I’m really grateful to be apart of such a meaningful show with a loving cast and crew.
Are you working on anything else? What can fans expect from you during the hiatus?
I will be recurring on Bones for season 10 some time this year and I’m working hard on getting a movie.
I can’t wait to see that. Thank you so much for chatting with me today.
Thank you so much for your time.
