Last time on The Real Housewives of Atlanta, Kandi‘s aunts suggested Kandi get Momma Joyce and husband Todd‘s mother Sharon together to mend fences. Inspired by this, Kandi organized a sit-down for all the ladies to hash out their differences. Kenya and Phaedra came to a détente of sorts, but as 7×05 came to an end, NeNe and Cynthia were going at it. Read on for our recap of RHoA 7×06, “Make-Ups & Breakdowns.”
A tentative reconciliation
RHoA 7×06 picks up where the previous episode left off: with NeNe and Cynthia screaming at each other. After Kandi, mistress of the understatement, comments “That didn’t go well,” etiquette expert Phaedra (seriously – have you read her book?) suggests everyone should give the two women some time to talk alone.
It’s touch and go for a while between crying and yelling and more crying, but ultimately Cynthia and NeNe decide to move on and cement the agreement with a hug. Cynthia addresses the moment in her personal interview:
For the first time in months, I saw the wall come down, and I have to say, I’m pretty optimistic that we can get this friendship back on track, because I have to be honest, I missed NeNe.
Hide yo’ weaves, hide yo’ wigs
In Kandi Land, the esteemed Ms. Burruss is Skyping with Todd, who’s in his homeland of New York for work. Apparently his mother is still feeling what the RHoAns would call “some type of way” about Kandi’s mother calling her a prostitute (and really, who could blame her?). Todd proposes that Kandi come up for a visit, and it just so happens that Cynthia’s planning a trip to the Big Apple for Fashion Week.
At Phaedra’s law office, trouble of another kind is brewing. Long-time background RHoA cast member Derek J – who co-hosts Bravo’s Fashion Queens alongside another familiar face, Miss Lawrence – is in what you might call a legal pickle. More specifically, the J Spot Salon owner is being sued by a client for allegedly stealing her hair. If you think that’s hilarious, you’re not the only one. “Hide yo’ daughters, hide yo’ weaves, hide yo’ wigs, Derek J is coming,” chortles Phaedra in her personal interview. Ultimately, she agrees to represent him.
Over at Casa Leakes, NeNe gets husband Gregg up to speed on the reconciliation with Cynthia and admits that she has reservations about whether she’ll ever be close with the other woman again. Cut to Cynthia and Peter‘s house, where a sheepish Cynthia tells her husband, “I think we made up.” Peter, who’s not known for his tact, makes no secret of the fact that he doesn’t approve.
You know, your process is crazy. Are you serious? This chick that used to go calling you 10, 15 times a day did a bunch of foul things – really foul things – and all of a sudden, you meet up with her and you want to hug and kiss and then you don’t want to hold her accountable for [what] she did?!
Peter’s viewpoint causes Cynthia to reevaluate the impact that her friendship and subsequent falling out with NeNe had on her family. He proceeds to tell her that if she doesn’t handle the situation in the right way, she’s going to “end up looking like a punk.” RHoA 7×06 is by no means the first time we’ve seen this side of Peter, but he can get way too controlling.
Don’t be bougie
The NYC trip that Todd and Kandi discussed earlier has become reality, which means we get to see Kandi gingerly navigating the subway. “Is that pee on the stairwell?” she asks Todd dubiously. “Don’t be bougie,” he admonishes, then takes her on a tour of where he grew up and proceeds to buy her some Timberlands and a Yankees cap.
While Kandi’s learning about Bronx fashion, Cynthia’s meeting up with old friend and designer Kithe Brewster, who wants her to close his show at New York Fashion Week. She’s thrilled – until Kithe disses her curves, her walk, and her age.
Back in Atlanta, Phaedra visits Derek J’s salon to take some video footage of where the alleged weave theft took place. The only problem is, she doesn’t know how to take video on her iPhone. “I’m a wordsmith and an attorney, but I never claimed to be a Spielberg,” she says haughtily in her personal interview.
The night before Cynthia walks the runway, she and Peter meet up with Kandi and Todd for dinner. The topic of the rift between Momma Joyce and Sharon comes up, and Peter relates that situation back to his own problems with Cynthia’s mother, much to Cynthia’s chagrin. Kandi and Todd keep it classy by arguing at the table, but manage to put on a united front for the fashion show the next day. Despite suffering from some eleventh-hour nerves, Cynthia ultimately delivers – or, as she puts it, “I did my thing. I set it off. I’m Cynthia Bailey. Now, what else is going on?”
Another margarita
As RHoA 7×06 draws to a close, it’s finally time for the long-awaited meeting between Kandi, Todd, and Sharon at a local diner in the Bronx, and the fact that Sharon orders “another margarita” before their food has even arrived is ominous to say the least. Impressively, Momma Joyce manages to ruin their meal despite being in another state. Sharon’s offended by Joyce’s allegations against her, while Kandi feels obligated to stand up for her mother. When Kandi reveals that Joyce has no intention of apologizing to Sharon, Sharon threatens to punch Joyce in the mouth the next time they see each other. “I don’t want to be disrespectful to you, but I will not be allowing that to happen,” Kandi counters. (Side note: Has anyone else noticed that when Kandi gets truly pissed, she purses her lips and raises one eyebrow?) Ultimately, in the interests of preserving her marriage, Kandi decides to just be quiet and let Sharon talk, at which point Sharon threatens to sue Joyce. Ominous chords.
Quote of the Week: “I’m not a good nurse. I’ll give you a pill, you swallow it, and I’ll call you from the mall.” – NeNe
